Janice

Janice (Ward) Walton is a Manager at Getting Smart, where she advocates for and advises learning organizations focused on innovations in teaching and learning. Janice is passionate about ensuring equity and access in education, and the majority of her career has been spent advocating for increased opportunities for educators and their students, specifically in the areas of teacher leadership, global education and STEM.

Before working with Getting Smart, she managed a portfolio of programs for a Las Vegas non-profit dedicated to helping students get to and through college. Prior to her time in Las Vegas, Janice spent most of her career at the NEA Foundation, where she collaborated with the CEO to lead the advancement of the Foundation’s innovation initiatives. In this role, Janice oversaw the design and implementation of a year-long professional development program designed to support educators as they acquire the skills needed to integrate global competencies into instructional practices. Through this program she led over 100 educators on study tours to China, Brazil and Peru. She also supported these educators as they created classroom lessons based on their experiences, and advocated for increased global learning through blogs and presentations. While at the Foundation she also led a grant-funded STEM program which developed urban farming initiatives in Milwaukee and New York City public high schools.

Janice holds a B.A. in Political Science from Virginia Tech and a Master’s in Public Policy from George Mason University.
